About the program
Relais & Châteaux at Lyxresan Travels
Relais & Châteaux was founded in 1954 by a group of French hoteliers who understood that certain properties — characterful, personal, often family-owned, with extraordinary restaurants at their centres — occupied a category that did not yet have a name. Seven decades later, the collection encompasses more than 580 independently owned establishments across 60 countries, united not by a management company or a brand standard manual, but by a set of founding values: character, courtesy, calm, charm, and cuisine. The last of these is perhaps the most definitive. The restaurants housed in Relais & Châteaux properties hold over 350 cumulative Michelin stars — a concentration of culinary distinction unmatched by any hotel program in the world. Castello di Reschio in Umbria occupies a restored medieval estate of 1,500 acres, developed over twenty years by the Bolza family. Triple Creek Ranch in Montana is an adults-only fly-fishing retreat of exceptional seclusion in the Bitterroot Mountains. The Inn at Little Washington in Virginia, holds two Michelin stars and is widely considered the finest country house restaurant in America.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Relais & Châteaux
What does Relais & Châteaux membership actually guarantee?
Relais & Châteaux membership is earned, not purchased — properties must meet the collection's quality criteria and submit to regular inspection. What the membership guarantees in practice is character: every Relais & Châteaux property is independently owned, has a distinctive identity, and typically has a serious kitchen at its centre. It is the most reliable quality signal for gastronomy-led independent luxury hotels.
Do all Relais & Châteaux properties have Michelin-starred restaurants?
Not all, but the concentration is remarkable — more than 350 of the 580+ member properties hold Michelin recognition of some kind. For guests who regard dining as central to their travel experience, Relais & Châteaux is uniquely positioned as a curating body. We can advise on properties with the strongest culinary programmes for your destination.
Which Relais & Châteaux property would you highlight for Europe?
Castello di Reschio in Umbria is among the most extraordinary recent openings in European luxury travel — a restored medieval castle and estate of 1,500 acres, developed over more than 20 years by the Bolza family, with accommodation in restored borgo houses and one of the finest equestrian centres in Italy. Château Saint-Martin & Spa above Vence is the finest property on the French Riviera's back country. We can advise in detail based on your destination.
