Shangri-La was founded in Singapore in 1971 by Robert Kuok, and built its identity around a quality of warm, anticipatory Asian hospitality that the brand describes as "Shangri-La Cares" — an ethos that is easier to feel than to define, but immediately evident the moment you arrive. The Horizon Club lounges, which exist at most properties, are a genuine differentiator: floor-butler service, curated food and drink from breakfast through evening cocktails, and views that at Shangri-La The Shard London or Island Shangri-La Hong Kong are genuinely extraordinary. The portfolio has expanded far beyond its Asian origins — the Shangri-La Paris occupies a Napoléon III palace on the Avenue d'Iéna with the Eiffel Tower visible at the end of the garden — without ever losing what makes it distinctively itself.
